Can Michael Saylor's Bitcoin Growth Forecast Hold Up for Strategy Investors Over the Next 20 Years

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor has said he thinks that two decades from now, a single Bitcoin could be worth more than $12 million.

  • Strategy's business model and valuation depend on bullish sentiment toward Bitcoin.

  • Saylor's forecast isn't impossible, but it looks highly optimistic.

Last month, Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) founder and Executive Chairman Michael Saylor predicted that Bitcoin's token price would grow at a 30% compound annual rate over a 10-year period. At the time, the market-leading cryptocurrency was trading at roughly $64,500.

As of this writing, Bitcoin is already up roughly 20% since Saylor made his prediction. Could Saylor's prediction for average annualized returns over the next 30 years really hold up?

The macroeconomic backdrop could help push Bitcoin higher

Bitcoin hit an all-time high of roughly $126,200 per token in October 2025. It then began an extended downtrend that took it to a cyclical low of below $58,600 this summer. Even though the cryptocurrency has recently seen some strong bullish momentum, it's still down roughly 39% from its peak. It's possible that current macroeconomic dynamics will help the token continue regaining ground.

With concerns about rising bond yields, oil prices, and inflation recently shaping action across the stock market and weighing heavily on the broader macroeconomic outlook, the stage could be set for Bitcoin to continue coming back into favor with investors in the near term. Crypto bulls have long touted the token's ability to function as a store of value or "digital gold," and an inflationary environment that coincides with record national debt continuing to reach new highs seemingly reflects the kind of dynamics that Bitcoin has been championed as a bulwark against.

Saylor's target looks highly optimistic

Strategy's core business is being a Bitcoin treasury company. It issues new shares of common stock and high-yielding preferred stock to raise money that it can use to buy Bitcoin. It also uses debt to fund such purchases. Its equity sales are effectively bets that the cryptocurrency's token price will continue to rise.

As such, Saylor and Strategy have incentives to promote the bull case for Bitcoin. While promoting bullish sentiment that pushes the cryptocurrency's token price higher makes it more expensive to purchase, Strategy stock is essentially set up to see gains and losses that are magnified reactions to what is happening to the price of Bitcoin. In other words, it's probably healthy to take Saylor's projections with a grain of salt.

Starting with a token price of $64,500, after 20 years at an average annualized growth rate of 30%, Bitcoin would reach a price of $12.26 million per token. The underlying source code for Bitcoin caps the total supply of it that can ever exist at 21 million tokens, and by 2046, over 99% of it will have been mined. At that point, the cryptocurrency would have a market capitalization of roughly $257.5 trillion. For reference, the gross domestic product of the United States was roughly $30.77 trillion in 2025.

Given the massive valuation growth assumed by Saylor's projection, I think there is very little chance of it proving accurate. That doesn't mean that Bitcoin couldn't be a worthwhile portfolio component over the next 20 years, but investors should keep their expectations in check.
