What this transaction means for investors

While CEO John Fieldly's $494,000 purchase of CELH shares isn't a massive amount compared to the $25.5 million in stock he already owns, it stands out as a notable development for investors in my opinion. Fieldly bought these shares on the open market, so that signals that he believes Celsius stock is headed higher. This seems to be opportunistic buying, with CELH stock down 53% over the last year. If nothing else, I'd use this insider buying as a "tie-breaker" of sorts for interested investors who may have been on the fence, as to whether they should be the stock or not following its recent pullback.

Celsius is a core holding for me and it has been a rough ride recently as the company integrated its Alani Nu and Rockstar acquisitions, but saw its namesake Celsius brand experience a sales slowdown. In Q2, total revenue rose 11%, but the company saw a wide divergence between Alani Nu's 21% sales increase and Celsius's 12% slide. Making matters worse, amid this divergence, adjusted EPS and adjusted EBITDA both dropped 23%, further spooking the market.

That said, one in every five ready-to-drink energy drinks in the U.S. are sold by Celsius now -- it seems to be more than just a passing fad. Furthermore, retail sales (how much Celsius product stores sold, as opposed to the company's sales to distributors, as mentioned earlier) grew 56% for Alani Nu, while Celsius only dipped 2% in Q2, suggesting that the revenue slowdown may have been more from distributor rebalancing than any loss of consumer interest.

Trading at just 20 times forward earnings and 16 times free cash flow, I may make one additional purchase alongside the CEO, but I wouldn't blame investors for waiting to see a turnaround in results before buying.
