Waste Management, Inc. operates as a premier North American environmental services provider with a market capitalization of $86.0 billion and TTM revenues of $25.7 billion, reflecting its scale as an industry leader. The company's integrated business model combines collection, transfer, recycling, and disposal operations, creating operational synergies and competitive advantages through its extensive network of facilities and established customer relationships. With 60,500 employees and a diversified customer base, WM maintains a defensible market position supported by essential infrastructure and recurring revenue streams from both residential and commercial segments.
Long story short, I don't believe this transaction should be a concern for investors. It looks like standard selling by an insider, rather than any timing around WM stock. The sale also reduces VP Carroll's stake by only 15%, so they remain aligned with the company's long-term success.
As for WM stock itself, I'd only be interested in buying shares of North America's largest waste management company. WM has unmatched scale with 253 active solid waste landfills, 17 medical waste incinerators, 113 recycling facilities, and 103 landfill gas-to-energy facilities. Benefitted from this massive networking and protected from "not in my backyard" sentiment from citizens across the country who would rather not see new landfills anywhere by them, WM has a wide moat across its operations.
WM stock has delivered 15.1% annualized total returns over the last decade and should continue to be a steady operator with a solid chance of continuing to outperform. As it continues to acquire small, regional waste management companies across the country, while expanding further into its recycling, energy, and healthcare waste niches, WM remains one of my favorite "steady-Eddie," blue-chip dividend stocks to buy right now at a reasonable 24 times free cash flow.
