"A global movement is emerging. The revolution for independence and AI sovereignty is now well underway."

That was the opening line from Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp in the company's latest shareholder letter. It may also be one of the most important clues to where Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) is going next.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

Most investors think about the AI race in terms of models. Who has the smartest AI? Who has the biggest data center? Who will beat OpenAI, Alphabet's Google, Anthropic, or Meta Platforms?

Karp is pointing to a different battle. Palantir wants to help companies control how AI is actually used inside their businesses. That sounds less exciting than building the next great AI model. But it could turn out to be a very valuable position.

AI controls a wide range of applications.

What does "AI sovereignty" actually mean?

Consider a simple example. Imagine a manufacturer using AI to decide what products to make, how much inventory to hold, and where to send its equipment. The company is giving AI access to some of its most valuable information.

That creates an obvious concern. What happens to that data? Who controls it? Which AI model is making the decisions? And what happens if the company becomes dependent on a technology provider that it cannot easily replace?

This is the problem Karp believes is becoming increasingly important.

In his Q2 2026 statement, he said Palantir's customers want "maximal control" over their operations, data, and decisions. He also argued that a company's competitive advantage should not be used as training data for future AI models.

In plain English, companies want to use AI without giving up control of the business. That's what Palantir means by AI sovereignty.

Palantir doesn't need to build the best AI model

Many investors think that Palantir is competing against frontier models like OpenAI's Claude. But that's not the case.

Palantir isn't trying to become another OpenAI. Instead, its software helps connect AI models to a company's existing data, employees, and business processes.

Think of the AI model as an engine. The engine can change. A company might use one model today and another one tomorrow. But Palantir wants to provide the system around that engine -- the part that helps the business use AI safely and effectively in the real world.

In other words, the AI model could change. But the system connecting AI to the business could become much harder to replace. And that's the bet Palantir is taking to make its competitive positioning more durable, rather than simply having a good AI model.

Palantir's numbers suggest customers are buying it

There is already evidence that businesses are embracing this approach. In the second quarter, Palantir's U.S. commercial segment jumped 149% from a year earlier to $764 million. Overall groupwide revenue increased 93% to $1.94 billion.

The company also generated $1.22 billion in adjusted free cash flow during the quarter. Those numbers suggest this isn't merely a futuristic idea. Companies are paying Palantir today.

But investors shouldn't get carried away. Palantir still has plenty to prove. Its growth outside the U.S. has been much slower, and the stock valuation already reflects extremely high expectations. For perspective, Palantir's stock trades at a price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of 145 times (as of writing).

So "AI sovereignty" isn't proof that Palantir will become the next trillion-dollar company. But it gives investors a clue about where Palantir believes its long-term competitive advantage will come from. And that's particularly important for investors to "hold on" to the stock for the long-term.

What does it mean for investors?

In a world where most investors focus on which AI model will win the AI race, Palantir is betting on something else.

The tech company is betting that by helping businesses turn AI models into something useful while letting them keep control of their data, decisions, and operations, it will build a successful business over time.

For investors, that may be the most important thing to understand, and more importantly, track in the longer term.
