A growing chorus of whistleblowers is alerting the world to the potentially catastrophic risks posed by unchecked advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

Many AI-related stocks declined in response, as investors chose to pare back risk.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

Tech leaders recommend slowing the pace of AI improvement

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei believes AI holds tremendous potential for good, such as curing diseases and creating economic abundance, but also poses dangerous risks, including cyberattacks and bioterrorism.

In turn, Amodei is calling for the AI industry, regulators, and government leaders to work together to establish universal safety standards.

"I have become convinced that fully addressing the risks requires even more prudence -- not just investing in risk prevention, but pacing the rate of capabilities advancement so that risk prevention has time to keep up," Amodei said. "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models."

Leaders of other AI giants, including SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have signaled their support for enacting more safeguards on AI advances.

A slowdown in AI development could weigh on these companies' growth

The AI race has created severe shortages in the memory chips needed for model training and inference. That's given Micron the ability to command sharply higher prices for its industry-leading memory products. A slowdown could help ease its rivals' supply chain bottlenecks, lessening Micron's pricing power.

AMD has emerged as a formidable challenger to Nvidia in the AI accelerator arena. AMD's high-margin GPU sales are growing rapidly, a trend investors expect to continue. Any sign to the contrary would likely spark a steep sell-off in the chipmaker's shares.

Intel's CPUs are seeing renewed life as orchestrators of AI agents. That's led to accelerating growth for the tech titan, which also seeks to become a leading domestic manufacturing partner for other semiconductor designers. A slowdown in chip demand would hurt Intel on both accounts.
