Anthropic IPO outlook: What is Claude and how is it different from Open AI?

Tradingkey - With the rise of AI-generated content, a new wave of unicorns are being created. The most notable of these is Anthropic. Anthropic is generating a lot of buzz in the investment community in addition to developing Claude. Anthropic is viewed as one of the fastest-growing, and most promising AI companies and has a valuation of at least $400 billion.

What Is Anthropic?

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research organization, was established by ex-OpenAI employees (the creators of ChatGPT). Anthropic focuses on developing "reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems" that function securely and ethically—this principle underlies the vast majority of their activities. Of particular note is their pioneering effort called "Constitutional AI," which uses an explicit set of moral and legal standards to train AI models in order to minimize the likelihood of producing socially harmful or biased outputs.

As of today, Anthropic ranks as the second most highly-valued private AI company globally at least $400 billion, according to various media reports. Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported the AI startup was in early talks to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation north of $900 billion, a number that would get it closer to its key rival, Open AI, which has a valuation of $850 billion .

These two companies are well positioned to enter the public marketplace via IPOs (initial public offerings) most likely in 2026; however, neither has provided a projected date for going public.

What Is Claude, Anthropic’s Flagship AI Product?

The flagship large language model of Anthropic, Claude, represents the foundation for growth and increased valuation of the company. Built entirely from the ground up using Anthropic's Constitutional AI framework, Claude was developed with the specific intent of being more reliable, transparent and controllable than other, comparable models. As such, Claude has demonstrated suitability for many enterprise applications where accuracy, compliance, and safety requirements are high, including, among other enterprise applications, financial services, medical services, legal services, and government applications.

Unlike many models that trade off speed or creativity for performance in some other areas, Claude was built to handle longer context windows for the input it receives so that it can analyze and process significant volumes of text within one single prompt. Because of this functionality, businesses benefit from Claude because they can perform their work with larger documentation, larger and more complex data sets, more complex legal documents, etc., which has led Anthropic to secure numerous partnerships with enterprise giants and several major cloud service providers (Amazon, Microsoft, Google). As Anthropic continues to update Claude and develop new versions of Claude, it is expected that they will grow their market share and cement their position as a leading enterprise Ai provider.

How Does Anthropic Differ From OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Rivals?

Anthropic differs from its biggest competitors, namely OpenAI and Google, primarily in its strong and unapologetic emphasis on the importance of AI safety and ethics. OpenAI and Google invest considerably in research about AI safety, but the emphasis of their strategy maximizes the advancement of general AI capabilities and commercializes these capabilities as quickly as possible. In contrast, Anthropic was formed specifically to address the safety risks presented by advanced AI systems; therefore, this focus on safety informs every product decision that Anthropic makes.

Claude is fundamentally different from ChatGPT (produced by OpenAI) and Gemini (produced by Google) due to its intentional safety-first approach to training its models. With Claude’s Constitutional AI philosophy, there is a clear set of ethical guidelines that are used in the training of the models that minimizes the likelihood that Claude will produce any form of harmful, false or inappropriate content. This provides a critical competitive advantage for enterprise customers in regulated industries, which is paramount. In addition, unlike Google and Microsoft, Anthropic has positioned itself as a neutral provider of AI technology; therefore, enterprise customers using Anthropic will not be required to become “locked in” to a single technology provider’s ecosystem.

Who Are Anthropic’s Key Competitors?

Anthropic faces stiff competition in an aggressive and highly competitive generative AI market. There are a number of large established tech companies and startups with substantial funding that present challenges to Anthropic. OpenAI is by far the most competitive player when it comes to generative AI.

OpenAI is currently the most competitive player in the generative AI field. Its core product, ChatGPT, holds a dominant position in both the consumer and enterprise markets and is widely recognized as a benchmark product in the industry. It is understood that OpenAI has simultaneously established two major monetization channels: consumer subscriptions (ChatGPT Plus) and enterprise services (API interfaces and customized model solutions), leading the industry in both commercialization speed and revenue scale. Compared to Anthropic, which focuses on the high-end security niche market, OpenAI covers the full range of needs from individual users to large enterprises, offering a larger market space and stronger profitability certainty.

Google is another major player in the generative AI space through its Gemini family of multimodal generative AI models. Google developed Gemini to leverage the power of its world-class search engine technology, cloud infrastructure, and worldwide user base. To date, Gemini has emerged as the principal alternative to ChatGPT, particularly for consumers who want integrations with Google productivity tools. Similar to the previous two players in the generative AI space, Anthropic also competes against many other AI startups, including xAI, and many open-source solutions being developed by companies like Meta Platforms. Open-source generative AI models are becoming increasingly attractive to many developers and small businesses looking for flexible, cost-effective generative AI solutions. Despite the high level of competition, Anthropic has carved out a valuable niche in the higher-value safety-focused generative AI segment of the market, which is projected to grow rapidly over the next several years.

Should Investors Be Interested in Anthropic’s IPO?

Anyone believing generative AI has a bright future will find that Anthropic's IPO will be one of the key events they will want to pay close attention to in 2026. The company's commitment to making AI safe, its excellent ability to get new customers at the corporate level and its highly-skilled employees are reasons why Anthropic may be one of the best investments within the technology sector. Unfortunately, direct pre-IPO investment opportunities for retail investors in Anthropic are mostly relegated to accredited or institutional investors. Consequently, retail investors wishing to invest indirectly in Anthropic will have three primary choices.

The KraneShares AI & Technology ETF (AGIX) is one option; this is an actively managed fund that invests in AI/technology companies (both public and private). Anthropic ranks as AGIX's tenth-largest holding (2.6%), along with other AI leaders (Nvidia, Alphabet, and Microsoft). AGIX has an expense ratio of 0.99%, or $99 for every $10,000 invested annually, and its shares appreciate by 17% so far in 2026.

Another option would be the ARK Venture Fund (ARKVX); which is a closed-end fund that primarily consists of investment made in private companies within the AI, space, robotics, and various other innovative sectors. Anthropic is the seventh-largest holding for ARKVX, at approximately 3.0% of the total investment; however, ARKVX also has significant investments in companies such as SpaceX and OpenAI. In addition, the expense ratio of ARKVX is much higher compared to AGIX, approximately equal to 3.49% of the average investment value; however ARKVX shares have only increased in price approximately 9% so far in 2026 and cannot be bought out of traditional stock markets. Therefore, investors must purchase these shares using a self-directed brokerage (via SoFi or Titan).

Destiny Tech100 (DXYZ) is an example of a closed-end fund traded on the New York Stock Exchange that provides an investment option in 100 institutional-scale venture-backed private technology companies. The fund has made known in February 2026, a $100 million investment into Anthropic, part of a $127 million portfolio expansion, but has not yet disclosed its exact weighting within the fund. DXYZ has a 2.5% management fee and is the top-performing of the three funds, with its share price up 30% for 2026.

Although all 3 of the funds have more expensive fees compared to traditional index fund options; these funds allow retail investors access to private AI companies that would normally be inaccessible. They also have built-in diversification which should help reduce the volatility of the AI market due to the number of technologically advanced start-ups competing against each other (because there are many ways a company can lose its technological advantage). Therefore, if an investor wants to invest in Anthropic but does not want to take the risk of putting all of their eggs in one basket, they can use this fund as a way to participate in Anthropic's growth while minimizing their investment risk. Because Anthropic is moving towards becoming an IPO, it is likely that these funds will receive greater investor interest, making them a good investment option for all those that are seeking to position themselves for an increase in their portfolios due to the rise of artificial intelligence technology.
